It is well established that the underprivileged sections of the society bear the brunt of environmental degradation the most. The unprecedented growth in vehicular traffic and rotting garbage contributes further to this unequitable outcome of development and is a big contributor to the ever deteriorating air quality index. It is important to reduce the number of vehicular trips and employ more efficient waste management techniques to control environmental damage.
In order to improve the air quality and reduce the burden on landfills around large cities, attempts should be made to manage the waste where it is being generated. Segregation of waste would come out as a successful policy if majority of the waste is reduced, reused and recycled at source. Green waste is one of the major challenges that add avoidable bulk to the overburdened landfills. There are a number of innovative solutions to convert waste to compost. These may be explored at individual as well as institutional levels.
Composting machines can lead to considerably decreased waste disposal trips to landfills by providing an in-situ processing solution to the low-density green waste. This can also provide added economic opportunities for the local community institutions like SHGs or the cleaning staff engaged therewith.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are the key words for Environmental Sustainability!
